Privacy policy

Just download it is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. It collects no personal data, and this page explains what it does with your information, which is almost nothing.

Effective

The short version

  • No personal data is collected. Not your name, email, browsing history or anything you download.
  • No analytics and no tracking of any kind.
  • No accounts. There’s nothing to sign up for.
  • No remote code. Everything the extension runs ships inside it. Nothing is fetched and run later.
  • Nothing is sent to any server of ours. There is no Just download it server.
  • Your files stay on your computer.

Where requests go

To find and save what you asked for, the extension makes requests to:

  • The site you’re downloading from, and the servers it keeps its files on, to find each version of the video, song or image and fetch it. These are the same kind of requests your browser makes when you use the site. On a site where you’re signed in, such as Instagram, the site sees them as coming from your account, just as when you browse it.
  • YouTube Music, when it’s matching a song. Spotify and Apple Music audio is copy-protected and never touched, so the extension searches YouTube Music for the same recording by its title, artist and length, and saves that.
  • Apple’s iTunes Search API, to look up a song’s details, such as its album, track number and genre, for the tags written into the file. It sends the song’s title and artist, with no key and no cookies.

Nothing else is contacted. These services receive each request the way they would from your browser, including your IP address, and handle it under their own privacy policies. None of it reaches us.

What stays on your computer

  • Your downloads. Files are saved to your Downloads folder through your browser. Joining video and sound, making MP3s, writing tags and recording GIFs all happen in your browser. While a download is being processed, its working files are kept in the extension’s private storage and deleted when it’s done.
  • Your settings. Choices like the download folder and file names are stored in your browser’s sync storage. If you’ve turned on sync in your browser, the browser copies them to your other devices through your Google or Mozilla account. They’re never sent to us.
  • A little working state. The progress of downloads in progress, which your browser clears when it closes, and, if Instagram asks the extension to slow down, a note of when it can start asking again.

Nothing about the pages you visit is recorded, stored or shared.

Why it asks for its permissions

  • Access to all sites, so the Download buttons and the right-click menu work wherever you are, and so it can fetch files from the site’s servers.
  • Downloads, to save files to your Downloads folder.
  • Tab capture (Chrome only), used only while you record a page as a GIF with Just download web page.
  • Storage, for your settings and the working state above.

This website

This website has no analytics and sets no cookies. The video at the top of the homepage is hosted on YouTube: until you press play it's just a picture served from here, and only when you press play does the YouTube player load, from YouTube's privacy-enhanced domain (youtube-nocookie.com), under YouTube's own privacy policy.

Changes

If anything here changes, this page will be updated and the effective date above will change with it. The extension is open source, so you can always check what it does in the code on GitHub.
